Frances Largeman-Roth, RDN, expert in nutrition and wellness and author of Eating with color, explains that one of the positive effects of skipping meals is having less swelling. "Intermittent fasting gives your digestive system time to process foods that are already in your body," she says. Studies have shown that during periods of fasting, individuals exhibited less inflammation, which can help fight the disease in the long term. "Skipping meals leads to lower body weight and loss of visceral abdominal fat that causes inflammation," explains Joel Kahn, MD, clinical professor of medicine at the Wayne State University School of Medicine. "In general, skipping meals is compatible with a healthy level of inflammatory markers in the body," he says.

"This is due to the drop in blood glucose," explains Largeman-Roth. "When we do not feed our brains, this can indicate to the body that it's time to close things." That is why if you skip meals or practice intermittent fasting, you must make sure you are doing it correctly, on a set schedule, and when you eat, you are filling up with food that will keep you going during periods of fasting.
